Why Your Professional Services Business Isn't Showing Up on Google (And How to Fix It)

You've built a solid reputation. Your clients refer you. Your work speaks for itself.

But when someone who doesn't know you searches Google for the service you offer in Brisbane, they find your competitors instead.

That's worth fixing - and it doesn't require a big ad budget. It requires SEO done right. Here are the 9 steps that actually move the needle for professional service businesses.

Step 1: Find Out What Your Clients Are Actually Searching For

Your clients don't search the way you talk about your services. They type things like "business accountant Brisbane" or "financial adviser near me" - not "strategic wealth management solutions."

Start by searching your own service in Google and look at the autocomplete suggestions. Those are real searches from real people. Write them down. That's your keyword list.

Free tools like Keywords Everywhere (a Chrome extension) can show you how many people search each term per month.

Step 2: See What's Working for Your Competitors

Search your target keyword and look at the top 3 results. Click through and take note of:

  • What's their page heading?

  • How much content do they have?

  • Do they have a Google Business Profile?

You're not copying them. You're identifying the bar you need to clear - then clearing it.

Step 3: Get Your Google Business Profile in Order

If you're a local business, your Google Business Profile is non-negotiable. It's what puts you in the map section of Google search results.

Make sure yours has:

  • The right business category

  • Your correct address, phone, and website

  • At least 10 recent photos

  • Regular posts (fortnightly is fine)

  • Responses to every review

Reviews are especially powerful here. If you have happy clients, ask them. A simple "would you mind leaving us a Google review?" goes a long way.

Step 4: Create a Separate Page for Each Service You Offer

If you offer a few different services, each one deserves its own page on your website. Not a section - a full page.

This gives Google a clear signal about what you do, and it means you can rank for multiple search terms instead of just one.

Think: one page for your core service, one for a secondary service, one for a niche you specialise in.

Step 5: Answer the Questions Your Clients Are Googling

Blog posts aren't just content for content's sake. They're how you show up when potential clients are doing research before they're ready to hire someone.

Think about what your ideal client searches at 9pm when they're wondering if they need your help. Write a blog post answering that question.

One post a month is enough to get started. Over time it compounds.

Step 6: Make Sure Each Page Is Properly Optimised

Once your content is written, make sure the basics are in place:

  • Your target keyword in the main heading

  • Keyword used naturally a few times throughout the page

  • A clear page title and meta description

  • Internal links to related pages on your site

  • Descriptive alt text on your images

This is what's called on-page SEO. It's not complicated, but most service business websites skip it entirely.

Step 7: Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics

These are free tools from Google that show you exactly how your site is performing - what keywords you're appearing for, how many people visit, and where they drop off.

Without this data you're guessing. With it, you can make small improvements that add up quickly.

Step 8: Build Your Online Credibility With Listings and Backlinks

Google trusts websites that other websites link to. The easiest place to start is free directory listings - Apple Maps, Bing Places, and any industry-specific directories relevant to your profession.

Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are identical across all of them. Inconsistencies confuse Google.

Step 9: Make SEO a Monthly Habit, Not a One-Off Task

SEO rewards consistency. A simple monthly routine is enough:

  • Publish one blog post

  • Post an update to your Google Business Profile

  • Check Search Console for any issues

  • Ask one happy client for a Google review

Small, steady effort beats a one-time website overhaul every time.
